Reconstructed from its original life as a barn, this cottage has recycled native Totara floorboards and stunning beams. The cottage was named in memory of New Zealand’s famous poet James K Baxter, who spent time in the small community in nearby Hiruhārama (Jerusalem) and was a frequent traveller along the river road. This cottage houses our collection of James K Baxter’s poetry and literature along with a range of artefacts donated by the nuns from the convent at Hiruhārama for those who have an interest.

On the ground floor, there is an open plan kitchen, lounge and dining area. The fully equipped kitchen (fridge-freezer, hob, oven, grill, kettle, toaster, electric fry pan, slow cooker, sandwich toaster) makes self-catering easy and the eclectic mix of Cassettes, LPs, board games and books make relaxing a pleasure. The downstairs bedroom area is located up two steps from the lounge. Here you will find a queen size bed and armchair. The second-story bedroom is reached via a set of outside stairs and has three single beds, providing flexibility to suit your group. From this vantage point you can relax on the balcony and enjoy the stunning views across the river to the hills opposite. A private bathroom with shower, wash basin and toilet comes complete with a range of toiletries which are friendly both to your body and the environment. The porch and overhang keep this cottage cool in summer and the pot belly stove in the lounge makes it an ideal, cosy retreat for the cooler months. Available all year.
